Last Christmas saw the first anniversary of the death of my grandfather. While packing up some stuff in his house I came across his old glasses. From my point of view they didn’t make him any better looking, quite the opposite in fact. They were big, dark bifocals with acetate, honey-coloured frames which left a mark on his nose every time he took them off … believe me, they wouldn’t suit anybody...

I realised, however, that looking at his glasses brought back more memories than any other articles of clothing or objects that belonged to him and, for the past year, anyone I saw wearing similar glasses reminded me of him.

I don’t know whether he liked them or not. In fact, I’m sure he never even considered it, and it didn’t matter how many times I told him how ugly they were, for him they were just handy, practical, comfortable glasses.

We are many grandchildren and there was only one pair of glasses, so I had to do something about that as it wouldn’t have been fair to keep them for myself … so I took my grandfather’s glasses and put them in a frame with my grandmother’s, so every time we cross the living room of their house they are present, in one way or another, enriching us with fond memories.

Here’s the result. Hope you like it.
