These original stone glasses are hand made by Rolf, an Austrian family business in the Tyrol region.
The truth is the whole frame is not made of stone, but consists of a wooden base which is then covered in a thin film of stone, giving them their unique attraction. The model in question is called Dino 41, a very appropriate name, given the prehistoric influences.
Another highlight is the fact that the frames don’t include any metal parts, or screws, employing an original hinge system that consists of only natural materials.
The reason we see very few stone glasses on the market is that, so far, the only way to make them is by hand, and few craftsmen will risk working with this hard yet fragile material that can break or shatter with the slightest knock. The secret behind the easy handling of these delicate glasses is the interior wooden structure that I mentioned before.
In the Rolf-spectacles website we can see this frame type for both prescription and sunglasses.
